Found this sushi gem in San Mateo on New Year's Eve. The rolls are excellent, made with succulent, generously portioned fresh fish. It's open everyday except on Tuesdays!

I've consistently been ordering takeout from this spot for years and it never fails to impress. Have tried a lot of items off of the menu and you really can't go wrong with anything on it. Some of my personal favorites are the combination sashimi, the Lion King roll, the Samurai roll, gyoza, and the seaweed salad. There is a lot of seating inside as the restaurant is quite spacious. Whether you're dining in or ordering takeout, the orders are always made in a timely fashion, even during peak hours. There is not a ton of parking directly by the spot, but any of the lots or street parking in proper DTSM are within walking distance from Fuji Sukiyaki. Would highly recommend to satisfy your sushi craving!

when I came to San Mateo to eat at Dash, I passed by an izakaya that looked pretty good, called Fuji Sukiyaki. Tonight’s dinner choice? Decided to give it a try! Location: 428 E 3rd Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401 Highlights: Value for Money: Each piece of nigiri is generously portioned, and the price is reasonable. Freshness: The sea urchin and oysters are quite fresh; overall, the fish quality is decent. Ambience: They have tatami rooms inside, giving it a nice, authentic vibe. Flavor: The variety of food combinations was very appealing to me. Some fish are sourced from Japan, which aren’t commonly offered in typical sushi places. There's a large selection of sushi and other dishes. Sunrise: Salmon arranged like flower petals, with roe in the center on top of rice. This was a childhood favorite of mine, though it’s missing the mayo. Japan Aji: Japanese Aji, great presentation and flavor, with a nice seared touch. Sukiyaki: Initially, I thought this was a sukiyaki-focused place, but they only have a few options. Planning to try the beef next time, which is around $28 — not bad. Oyster Bomb: Oyster topped with sea urchin, roe, and a quail egg — super satisfying in one bite. Hand Roll: They have some off-menu items written on a small blackboard. I ordered the uni, roe, and toro hand roll that the table next to me had. Rolls: Since I ordered a lot of raw items earlier, I decided to try a baked roll too, which was also good. They offer many types of rolls. Side Dishes: For those who don’t eat raw fish, they have a variety of cooked dishes, which go well with sukiyaki. Overall, it feels like a down-to-earth izakaya with good value. Looking forward to my next visit!

The rolls are amazing. We tried Aloha and Rainbow. The place is a bit dated, so I would not go there for a romantic first date necessarily :). But if you up for high quality sushi and rolls — this is superb.

The sukiyaki here is quite good - the broth is light and too sweet/salty, and there's a lot of meat and noodles and vegetables and tofu.

Fuji Sukiyaki is hands-down my favorite sushi spot. The fish is always fresh, the rolls are creative and packed with flavor, and the service is friendly and attentive. Whether it’s a quick lunch or a special night out, the quality is always top-notch. Highly recommended.
